Natural Ways to Lower Blood Pressure

For those with high blood pressure, medication is usually the answer. But there are some helpful ways to keep hypertension under control without turning solely to a prescription.

Just relax: By learning to manage the stresses in your life, you may find that you also manage your blood pressure. You may not be able to eliminate all of the things that bring stress into your life, but you can take a new approach to keep your stress levels under control.

Ditch the caffeine: You might think that your coffee fix is what is getting you through your day, but it may also be causing spikes in your blood pressure. If you are prone to high blood pressure, you should keep your caffeine intake in check and don’t exceed two cups a day.

Cut back on salt: It doesn’t matter what your blood pressure is, lowering your sodium intake will help lower your blood pressure. Keep an eye on the nutrition labels and try and stick to foods that are not over processed.

No smoking: People who smoke are at a higher risk of hypertension. Tobacco and nicotine can contribute to blood pressure spikes.

Stay active: Exercise is one of the key ingredients in maintaining a healthy blood pressure. Just 30 minutes a day can significantly lower your blood pressure and help you to lose weight. For some, losing weight can also play a hand in lowering blood pressure.

Drink in moderation: Yes, having an occasional drink has its health benefits, but drinking in excess can elevate a person’s blood pressure. Having more than two alcoholic beverages a day has been shown to raise blood pressure in both men and women. Try having your drink with a meal, which will help absorb some of the alcohol.

Try yoga: Lately, the benefits of yoga have been popping up everywhere. Yoga is an excellent form of exercise that is both relaxing and challenging. There are many benefits to the age-old practice, including lowering blood pressure.

Meditate: There are many ways to meditate, and any one of them could help to lower your blood pressure. Find a few minutes a day to meditate and relieve yourself of the stresses that could be putting you at higher risk for hypertension.

Eat more bananas: You may not realize it, but bananas could help you regain your health. Potassium counters the harmful effects of sodium, and most of us do not get enough of it. Bananas are high in potassium, a mineral that helps to lower blood pressure. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, we should get at least 4,700 milligrams a day. Other good sources of potassium are yogurt, orange juice and baked potatoes with the skin. (As shown on Health.com)
