Hip Replacement Surgery: What You Need to Know

The wear and tear endured from years of life living comes with sometimes-necessary new journeys towards health and healing. For people living with hip pain or immobility, hip replacement surgery, or hip arthroplasty, is a commonly used procedure.

Hip replacements don’t necessarily just come with age. Numerous factors could lead a person towards needing a hip replacement. An injury or fracture endured to the hip, a bone tumor, arthritis, persistent pain or a lack of mobility are all valid reasons to consider the surgery.

When looking into arthroplasty, it’s important to consult your doctor, ask questions, and to know the risks and how to prepare for the procedure. It may be time to talk to your doctor about hip replacement surgery if you have trouble sleeping due to hip pain, pain while walking assisted by a walker or cane, have trouble walking up or down stairs, have a hard time sitting or standing, or cannot partake in activities you enjoy.

Prior to surgery, make sure to prepare for when you come home. By arranging a ride home from a family member or close friend, asking them to stay with you for a little while, and having them there to help you with your medication, meals, and mobility around the house, you will ease your worries about trying to take care of things on your own. Another important thing to think about is preparing your house to the best of your ability prior to the procedure. Place things that you will need within reach at waste level and have a reacher on hand, install grab bars and bed rails, and consider a toilet riser.

By taking the proper steps to learn about hip replacement surgery and knowing how to prepare accordingly, your recovery can go smoothly and you will be on the fast track to enjoying the benefits of your new hip!
